Şüräle limited edition artists’ book is composed of new paintings by Christos Kakouros and a story written by Dinara Asadulina: a reworking of a folklore tale from the Kazan Tatar people, native to the Volga region.
At its centre is Şüräle, a mischievous forest creature, and the Forest itself: a place of encounter, transformation and possibility.
Dinara’s version grows out of the history of her own family, bringing together folklore and memories of erasure, migration, forced movement and being on the run.
It is a tale of people who have lost their home, and of finding strength, companionship and another way forward through the Forest.
