What does it mean to write or to make in the presence of other languages, opinions, histories?
This January 2026 course has been inspired by the art and writings of Édouard Glissant, Don Mee Choi, Jeffrey Gibson, Sawako Nakayasu, and Stephanie Syjuco. We looked at the work of these artists and taped into our own understandings of creating in awareness of the open, connective force of the world.
Together with the participants we wrote, drew, and made, getting closer to who we are, and exploring the narratives and voices that have shaped us.
The course took place online via the New York Institute platform. NYI is a biannual online summer and winter school in cultural and linguistic studies from Stony Brook University in Long Island, NY.
